Gematria is a study of assigning numerical values to words and figures to illustrate connections between Hebrew scriptures and other texts. Through gematria, a scholar is able to discover hidden meanings in sacred texts by comparing two distinct words or phrases with the same numerical value or find mysterious messages encoded in plain text. Like numerology and tarot, gematria is a form of divination that requires an understanding of language in order to uncover deeper truths and patterns buried within the scriptures.
Compared to numerology, which assigns single-digit numbers from 1-9 according to a person's birth date and name, gematria is much more complex and requires more precision in the calculation. Numerology usually applies only one type of calculation—reducing the values of letters and numbers within one's birth name down to one single digit—while gematria can utilize multiple techniques. Gematria also assigns numbers directly to letters as opposed to reducing them down into single digits—in numerology, the letter "A" equates to the number 6 while in gematria it corresponds to 1.
Similarly, tarot readings require an understanding of symbols that tell a story and reveal clues about one's fate. On the other hand, gematria relies on finding correspondences between words by calculating their numerical values. Tarot cards require interpreting symbols as determined by a person's intuition while decoding messages via gematria requires knowledge of mathematics, language, and history among other disciplines.
